Many physical phenomena are affected by the intrinsic acidity/basicity of the free liquid water surface, yet it remains an active and controversial subject. Macroscopic bubble and droplet experiments have been interpreted to indicate an air–water interface covered with hydroxide, whereas recent molecularscale studies produce the opposite conclusion, viz. that hydroxide is repelled from the interface while hydronium is strongly adsorbed. Here we report results from resonant UV second harmonic generation (SHG) experiments that are best modeled by surface depletion of hydroxide and establish at most a weak surface adsorption. This finding is consistent with our earlier SHG measurements indicating surface enhancement of hydrated protons, as well as with other molecular-scale experiments and simulations, but stands in stark contrast to the results from macroscopic studies. The acidity, or basicity, of aqueous surfaces could strongly influence heterogeneous atmospheric chemical processes, such as aerosol reactions and gas uptake. 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Autoionization at the surface of neat water: is the top layer pH neutral, basic, or acidic?
Autoionization of water which gives rise to its pH is one of the key properties of aqueous systems. Surfaces of water and aqueous electrolyte solutions are traditionally viewed as devoid of inorganic ions; however, recent molecular simulations and spectroscopic experiments show the presence of certain ions including hydronium in the topmost layer. This raises the question of what is the pH (def...
متن کاملSurface Phenomena of Molecular Clusters by Molecular Dynamics Method
Liquid droplets of water and argon surrounded by their vapor have been simulated by the molecular dynamics method. To explore the surface phenomena of clusters, each molecule is classified into 'liquid', 'surface', or 'vapor' with respect to the number of neighbor molecules. The contribution of a 'surface' molecule of the water cluster to the far infrared spectrum is almost the same as that of ...
متن کاملMechanistic prospective for human PrPC conversion to PrPSc: Molecular dynamic insights
PrPC conversion to PrPSc isoform is the main known cause for prion diseases including Crutzfeldt-Jakob, Gerstmann-Sträussler-Sheinker syndrome and fatal familial insomnia in human. The precise mechanism underling this conversion is yet to be well understood. In the present work, using the coordinate file of PrPC (available on the Protein Data Bank) as a starting structure, separate molecular d...
متن کاملMolecular dynamics methods in microscale heat transfer
In normal heat transfer and fluid flow calculations, the fluid phases are treated as being continuous with properties such as viscosity and thermal conductivity being assumed to be only a function of local pressure, composition and temperature in the flow domain. However, as the size of the flow domain (the channel) becomes smaller and smaller, the continuum treatment breaks down since, in real...
متن کاملWettability of Liquid Mixtures on Porous Silica and Black Soot Layers
Sophisticated manipulation of surface roughness and solid surface energy are widely used to design super-hydrophobic layers. In this work, we designed highly porous silica layer with contact angle (CA) of 145°, and its robustness was promoted with thermal treatment. Wettability of coated layer is studied with CA measurement for different liquid surface tensions using diluted organi...
